Laurence is a Lebanese French journalist. She is returning to her hometown which she left many years ago, in 1975. There she meets Rachid, an Algerian journalist in exile. She feels attracted to him and pushes him to seek political asylum in France. However, Rachid, torn by his unglamorous past - he left Algiers after the assassination of his best friend - cannot detach himself from his native country.
