Otho and Shad leave Abidjan hoping they will make it in Europe and come back as heroes one day. But their common hopes are shattered after a police raid in Spain. Otho is escorted back to the border and returns to his country empty-handed, without the vain symbols of the idealized Western world. Because he hasn't lived up to the expectations of his family and community, he is rejected. Shad escapes the police and pursues his dream of conquering Europe. He goes to England, where he meets Tango, a French woman who takes him to Paris in order to arrange a sham marriage.

Otho en Shad hebben Abidjan verlaten om het grote avontuur te zoeken op Europese gronden. Ze dromen ervan om in een land met alleen maar weldoeners terecht te komen. Otho wordt een verstoteling in zijn land. Terwijl Shad, na het trotseren van enkele opstoten en vechtpartijen in de megalopolissen van het noorden, een held wordt; maar niet helemaal op de manier die hij had gewild. ‘Après l'Océan' verweeft het lot van Afrika met dat van Europa: vooruitgang tegen elke prijs en de strijd tegen smaad en ondergang.
